July 7th 2010A ScotRail man has been out to Germany to test drive a new Class 380.
Willie Fletcher, 60, helped try out one of the new Desiros round Siemens' five mile test track near Dusseldorf. Willie, who works on general station duties at Neilston, secured the rare opportunity to test drive a train after winning a staff competition.
‘Driving the train was a bit scary at first but a great experience,' said Willie. ‘I also enjoyed meeting the Siemens team who are getting the trains ready to come to Scotland later this year.'
The new Desiros will be phased into service on Ayrshire and Inverclyde routes from September 2010 and are part of a planned fleet of 130 vehicles. Before joining ScotRail, Willie Fletcher was a firefighter with Strathclyde Fire Brigade. He won the trip to Germany in a staff competition.
