Tim O'Toole is moving back to Britain as chief operating officer and deputy chief executive of FirstGroup.
Mr O'Toole joined the Board of FirstGroup last May as a non-executive director after stepping down as managing director of the London Underground a year ago to return to Philadelphia in the US. He is one of the most experienced rail operators in Britain and the USA.
The former CEO of Consolidated Rail Corporation, one of America's leading railway companies, O'Toole, a lawyer by trade, joined Transport for London in 2003. Once heard describing London as the centre of the universe he is expected to work from offices at Paddington.
Martin Gilbert, FirstGroup's chairman said, ‘I am delighted to welcome Tim... he brings considerable UK and US experience together with a strong track record of achievement. I am confident that he will make a significant contribution to the Group and the shaping of its continued successful development.'
Meanwhile the upward rise of Mary Grant, FirstGroup's rail supremo, continues as she takes over Rebecca Shaw's responsibilities for the bus operation in Britain, Ireland and Germany.
